First stop... Southampton The Village of Southampton was settled in 1640 and incorporated in 1894. It is the oldest English settlement in the state of New York and is named after the British Earl of Southampton. The early colonists, with the help of a resident Shinnecock Indian guide, were led over an old woodland trail that is now North Sea Road to an ideal spot for their first settlement. There, at the head of what is Old Town Pond, they constructed their first homes. Built by town founder Thomas Halsey, this 17th-century home is thought to be the oldest English-style house in New York State. An array of furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries that was donated by local families is on display in the house that is open from July to mid-October.
