Re-purposed Container Gardening

-


We have still to landscape our side yard which gets lots of sun and is perfect for a large vegetable garden full of lovely raised beds...


but...
 


 until then we are making due with some unusual planters.



 I just picked up this old wheelbarrow to plant an herb garden next to our tomatoes,


 and close by my husband's outdoor kitchen!

Fun idea Terri, I have not planted anything yet. I do have one strawberry plant that seems very happy at the moment, does that count? Kathysue

Therese, just be careful that the wheelbarrow doesn't have lead paint that will get lead into your herbs. I always worry about contamination in my garden, especially if my family is eating from it. I love the idea of the container, though!

I grow Rosemary, Basil, chives, thyme, oregano, sage, bay, and a few others.

Your cleverness Terri continues to constantly amaze me. How green on so many levels! Sadly I have a few herbs but they struggle in this heat. I have basil, rosemary (for my G & T's) and lemon mint; however, they are not planted as chic as yours are my dear.

Have a green thumb of a weekend. Is your sweet son enjoying being home for the summer? Emily is already BORED!

I love old and unique containers for plants! The wheelbarrow sounds like a cute idea for your herbs. I have an old fashioned herb garden out my backdoor. It needs a lot of work, though!! At least you won't have weeds!

well, you know how much I love an unusual planter- and these are great!! my "herb garden" is on the to-do list... have it designed, but just not executed!! it's killing me as I'm dying to get plants in the ground (raised beds;)

I am way behind in my planting this year. I usually have a full and wonderful garden by this time...but not this year. Hmm, I'll add it to my "to do" list. You know, Fabiana is right, watch for lead paint and processed wood. I have raised beds for veggies and made sure I used unprocessed wood. But flowers are great in anything!

I always grow a big pot of herbs on my back deck. This year I have rosemary, thyme, sweet basil, thai basil and mint. I like the tin container your have with the trellises.

Though summer began here yesterday after a long, wet, cold winter (Who ever heard of snow throughout all of May?) some of my little herbs have endured, returned and are reaching to the sun. The returnees: sage, thyme, tarragon...yipee! I have them in half baskets hanging off the edge of the deck and mix in annuals.

I have a herb garden on my little townhouse balcony; mint, sage, lavendel, basil, chive, cilantro. We have an unusually early heatwave in Helsinki, so everything is growing beautifully.

Holiday Home Tour - House #2

Both my mom and my uncle's homes were part of the Holiday Home Tour this year benefiting The Alameda Family Services League. My uncle's home is a grand old Spanish Revival that wraps the corner of Northwood Dr. (the street I grew up on) and Yale Dr. where he and my mom grew up and where my mom now lives. His address is actually Gibbons Drive which is one of the most beautiful tree lined streets in Alameda. "Alameda" actually means, tree-lined avenue!  This fountain greets you at the entry to his home. Santa had the perfect spot for a long afternoon of greeting guests.  You may remember the greeting he gave my mom when he saw her!! A lovely vignette awaits you at the door. My mom is no stranger to this house. They have lived in the same neighborhood, just a few houses apart, for over 40 years! We haven't had a summer vacation yet but all it took for me to get inspired to do a little upgrade to our summer room or as my hubby calls it, his mancave, which is actually our garage, was this little number... It had been sitting for the longest time in my favorite thrift store and as hard as I tried to ignore it, it finally got my attention when one night as I was watching a movie with my hubby I imagined it across the room replacing an existing bench. Bright and early the following morning I high tailed it over there hoping it would still be there waiting for me! I sighed a breath of relief when I spied it over in the corner.  It was originally priced at $250 but had been lowered recently to $100. I asked politely if they might meet me at $75.   They promptly agreed as they were anxious to free up space. Once I got it home it became the catalyst for further upgrades in the space.
