I recently had the pleasure of spending a lovely afternoon with a dear friend who shares my passion for all things nautical.  These are photos of some of his most cherished possessions, many of which were passed down to him by his Grandfathers.  The last 2 photos are of the antique microscope that one of his Grandfathers used to study the diseases of oysters.

What a sweetheart to dedicate this post to me and my DB "Dearly Beloved." These are such grand nautical treasures. That tall ship is so detailed it looks huge. The mirror and matching frame are extraordinary; and I think I know right where I would put them. I like the skiff,little blue sailboat bottle and shackles too.

This post makes me nostalgic for sure. I have lived in the Northeast and have spent so many pleasant weekends at the coastal shores of Long Island, and watched on the small docks at Staten Island the ships come and go out to the sea. While I could not go often to Cape Cod, I did spend many wonderful vacations possessed by the mysterious beauty of the dunes of the cape and the surrounding area. I believe anyone who spends time on a boat or lives by the sea evokes a need to express it in someway.
Love all the photos, especially the one with her beloved? framed in the mirror.

thanks for asking it was a piece I did years ago in a college art class- a quick sketch taken from a garden book or magazine? -- Some one actually liked it and asked me for it -- as it was going out the door, my former partner snapped a close up with all its imperfections.

I love the old ships on see icey sea with the ice-caps. I have long wanted a ship in a bottle (or not in a bottle like these :-) but I have never been lucky enough to come across one in my antique shopping.

Very Cool "Beach House Living". I have a thing for nautical so you can tell your DB that it's more than ok to have boat stuff! My last house I had, it encompassed a below deck, (basement-room) that was built to feel like a bar-room on a boat complete with brass port-hole windows!.. Awesome image of the little girl in the black and white photo. I would have that blown up!

Therese, what a collection! And what many great memories must run in the family!

I know close to nothing about boats (I am a city land crab) but I sure can appreciate them. And so many of these old objects are so decorative. Object no. 2, 9, 11 and 14 can move in with me any time!

Holiday Home Tour - House #2

Both my mom and my uncle's homes were part of the Holiday Home Tour this year benefiting The Alameda Family Services League. My uncle's home is a grand old Spanish Revival that wraps the corner of Northwood Dr. (the street I grew up on) and Yale Dr. where he and my mom grew up and where my mom now lives. His address is actually Gibbons Drive which is one of the most beautiful tree lined streets in Alameda. "Alameda" actually means, tree-lined avenue!  This fountain greets you at the entry to his home. Santa had the perfect spot for a long afternoon of greeting guests.  You may remember the greeting he gave my mom when he saw her!! A lovely vignette awaits you at the door. My mom is no stranger to this house. They have lived in the same neighborhood, just a few houses apart, for over 40 years! Summer Living

We haven't had a summer vacation yet but all it took for me to get inspired to do a little upgrade to our summer room or as my hubby calls it, his mancave, which is actually our garage, was this little number... It had been sitting for the longest time in my favorite thrift store and as hard as I tried to ignore it, it finally got my attention when one night as I was watching a movie with my hubby I imagined it across the room replacing an existing bench. Bright and early the following morning I high tailed it over there hoping it would still be there waiting for me! I sighed a breath of relief when I spied it over in the corner.  It was originally priced at $250 but had been lowered recently to $100. I asked politely if they might meet me at $75.   They promptly agreed as they were anxious to free up space. Once I got it home it became the catalyst for further upgrades in the space.
