Keeping Hens

Delicious fresh eggs and lots of fun too!


Back in February I did a post on a favorite shop of mine in Lafayette called The Hen House.


The owner of the shop is Elizabeth,  known as "La Contessa".


Last week she invited my Mom and I over for pink champagne in her garden.


I had never been to her home but I imagined it would be pretty amazing based on her fabulous shop, Hen House.


Let's just say... " pretty amazing" doesn't begin to cover it!


It's so darn fabulous that pictures can hardly do it justice,


but you know me... 


I did my best!


I thought I'd begin the tour with the hen house in her back garden.  As you can see, it's no ordinary hen house.  It has a chandelier, a chaise lounge and a french style niche complete with mirror for preening.

There's La Contessa who I'll properly introduce you to tomorrow!

That is too much! I love her attention to detail! The hens have a pretty darn nice home. Looking forward to more about the hens and their "mom."

Terri, I love this, I have a friend that has hens and I would love to have a couple. The thought crosses my mind from time to time. This makes me want some even more. Then I could get my pretty blue eggs, that I love. I will be back tomorrow to meet the contessa, Kathysue

What a fun place! I have worked with animals (horses) and have always appreciated good, spacious enviroment for the animals and always buy free range eggs, but have to say that I 've never seen a hen house with chandelier...

okay, you have THE neatest adventures! I'm stuck in a humid city doing swim parties, receiving emails that my 7 year old is throwing spit wads in the bathroom, and toilet papering the neighbor's houses and you're sipping pink champagne along a hen with her own chandelier! Something's not right with this picture! haha!

I love that the hens live in such style! I was like "is that a chandelier in the hen house?!" lol

Growing up, I would spend summers in a little town in Mexico with my mom's family, and one summer I bought two little chicks that went with me everywhere. I had to leave them with my grandpa when I came back home, but I made him promise me he wouldn't eat my chicks when they grew up!

The mirror is the crowning touch! We had a big plain old one for my pet duck so he wouldn't get lonely but the rooster used to like to strut in front of it too.

Hello!!! Just found you from The Zhush ---I have become obsessed with eggs lately. Scrambled, fried....I'm always wanting an egg! So, loving the Hen House. Pink Champagne is my favorite and I'm raising my glass to La Contess and you!!!! Now, I'm off to explore your entire blog!!!

I am so looking forward to this...eggs are my favorite food. Is that crazy? I just love the versatility. I have never had a pet and wouldn't do well with a chicken coop, I'm sure but it is definitely fun to visit ... albeit virtually! :)

Holiday Home Tour - House #2

Both my mom and my uncle's homes were part of the Holiday Home Tour this year benefiting The Alameda Family Services League. My uncle's home is a grand old Spanish Revival that wraps the corner of Northwood Dr. (the street I grew up on) and Yale Dr. where he and my mom grew up and where my mom now lives. His address is actually Gibbons Drive which is one of the most beautiful tree lined streets in Alameda. "Alameda" actually means, tree-lined avenue!  This fountain greets you at the entry to his home. Santa had the perfect spot for a long afternoon of greeting guests.  You may remember the greeting he gave my mom when he saw her!! A lovely vignette awaits you at the door. My mom is no stranger to this house. They have lived in the same neighborhood, just a few houses apart, for over 40 years! Summer Living

We haven't had a summer vacation yet but all it took for me to get inspired to do a little upgrade to our summer room or as my hubby calls it, his mancave, which is actually our garage, was this little number... It had been sitting for the longest time in my favorite thrift store and as hard as I tried to ignore it, it finally got my attention when one night as I was watching a movie with my hubby I imagined it across the room replacing an existing bench. Bright and early the following morning I high tailed it over there hoping it would still be there waiting for me! I sighed a breath of relief when I spied it over in the corner.  It was originally priced at $250 but had been lowered recently to $100. I asked politely if they might meet me at $75.   They promptly agreed as they were anxious to free up space. Once I got it home it became the catalyst for further upgrades in the space.
